KARACHI: Following the directives of Additional IG Karachi, Azad Khan, the city police have announced a rigorous crackdown on vehicles and motorcycles using non-prescribed or fancy number plates, effective from March 30, 2026. According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Police Chief, the initiative aims to enforce the law and enhance the city’s security apparatus. Citizens are urged to ensure their vehicles are equipped only with government-approved standardized number plates, as the use of private, fancy, or unauthorized plates is strictly prohibited by law.
Security and Crime Prevention Concerns
The official statement highlighted that non-standardized and fake number plates pose significant challenges, such as difficulties in identification, increased security risks, and the potential for criminal activities that hinder the prevention and investigation of street crimes. The use of illegal plates makes it nearly impossible for law enforcement and surveillance systems to track vehicles effectively.
Strict Enforcement
The Karachi Police emphasized that the campaign starting on March 30 will be indiscriminate, and any individual found operating a vehicle with illegal plates will face immediate legal action under the prevailing traffic and security laws. “The goal is to ensure the writ of the law and make the city’s streets safer for everyone. We advise all residents to replace any unauthorized plates before the deadline to avoid penalties,” the spokesperson added.
