KARACHI: In a major boost to maternal healthcare in the metropolis, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has officially functionalized its state-of-the-art modular operation theatres (OTs) in the Gynecology and Obstetrics department.
The modern OT block was formally inaugurated by Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho. Speaking to the media at the inauguration ceremony, the health minister emphasized that equipping the gynecology ward with advanced machinery will ensure immediate, high-quality medical facilities for patients.
The newly upgraded OTs and emergency services are now fully operational, while Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services will be launched soon, alongside ongoing planning for a dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborns. Furthermore, the hospital has also increased its overall bed capacity to accommodate more patients.
Addressing the long-standing issue of healthcare staff shortages, Dr. Pechuho announced the government’s decision to hire more medical professionals. She noted that while some recruitments were recently completed, past hiring processes were delayed due to legal challenges. However, the recruitment process has now been expedited to meet the hospital’s needs.
The minister reaffirmed that healthcare facilities at JPMC are continuously expanding across various departments. She stated that the ongoing reforms aim to upgrade Karachi’s healthcare system to international standards, ensuring the public has access to the best possible medical treatment.
