KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, officially inaugurated the three-day 21st “My Karachi: Oasis of Harmony” exhibition at the Expo Center on Friday. Organized by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), the event showcases over 300 stalls from Pakistani companies, highlighting local products and industrial potential. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Provincial Minister for Industries Jam Ikram, prominent businessmen Arif Habib and Zubair Motiwala, along with various diplomats and industrial leaders.
Support for Gul Plaza Fire Victims
During his keynote address, CM Murad Ali Shah addressed the recent tragedy at Gul Plaza. He announced that the government has commenced the distribution of Rs. 10 million in relief funds to the families of the martyrs. Shopkeepers are being provided Rs. 500,000 each as initial support, and the CM pledged that within two months, victims will receive full compensation for business losses and alternative shop spaces will be provided in coordination with local builders.
Economic Powerhouse & Infrastructure Boost
Highlighting Karachi’s economic significance, the Chief Minister noted that the city contributes 25% to the national GDP and 90% to Sindh’s economy. To further this growth, he announced that Rs. 10 billion has been allocated for industrial infrastructure development by June, while Rs. 18 billion has been approved for the Mayor of Karachi for city-wide projects. Additionally, Rs. 21 billion is dedicated to general infrastructural improvements in collaboration with FWO.
Energy and Security Concerns
The Chief Minister expressed concern over the gas shortage, noting that despite Sindh producing 65% of Pakistan’s natural gas, local industries are struggling. He vowed to fight for a fair energy distribution policy. On the security front, he credited law enforcement agencies for the city’s stability but emphasized that security remains a continuous process to protect investors and citizens alike.
Future Projects: Water and Safety
The CM stated that the government is working with the World Bank on the K-IV project and shifting focus toward Desalination plants to meet the city’s water needs. Regarding fire safety, he mandated strict fire audits for all buildings through Civil Defense and the District Administration. He urged the business community to collaborate, stating that the government’s Public-Private Partnership model is now recognized even at the federal level. The exhibition continues to serve as a testament to Karachi’s resilience, evolving from a peace-building initiative two decades ago into a premier event on the city’s trade calendar.
