KARACHI – The escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have hit Karachi’s energy supply hard, causing a major shortage of Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) and leaving large parts of the city without gas after 9:00 AM.
The Supply Gap According to sources within the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), the system is facing a significant deficit. Currently, Karachi is receiving 650 MMCFD from natural gas sources, but a shortfall of 80 MMCFD in RLNG supplies has crippled the distribution network.
Key Reasons for the Shortage The disruption is directly linked to the volatile situation in the Middle East, affecting global supply chains. Sources indicate that Qatar has shut down an RLNG plant, and currently, no LNG cargoes are en route to Pakistan.
Affected Areas The crisis has left citizens in several high-density neighborhoods struggling. Major affected areas include New Karachi, North Karachi, Surjani Town, Federal B. Area, Shadman Town, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Dastagir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Garden, Lea Market, and Orangi Town.
Upcoming Gas Schedule The SSGC has warned that if the supply remains suspended, a more restrictive gas load-shedding schedule will be implemented. The utility company is expected to announce a new official schedule after March 10.
