New Grading System Implemented for Matric Exams in Karachi

KARACHI – The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has officially announced the implementation of a new grading system for matriculation examinations, marking a significant shift in the assessment process.

Phased Implementation

The new policy will be rolled out in two phases. For Class 9th (SSC Part-I), the system takes effect starting with this year’s annual examinations. For Class 10th (SSC Part-II), the new grading criteria will be applicable from the year 2027.

Key Highlights of the New Policy

The most notable change is the elimination of the word “Fail” from the mark sheets. Under the new rules, the minimum marks required to pass an exam have been increased to 40%. Students scoring below this threshold will no longer be labeled as “Fail”; instead, they will receive a ‘U’ (Unsatisfactory) grade and will be required to retake the exam.

Furthermore, a new top-tier A++ grade has been introduced for students securing between 95% and 100%. To align with modern educational standards, a Grade Point Average (GPA) system is also being introduced on an interim basis. This move aims to reduce the psychological pressure on students by replacing discouraging terminology with a more constructive grading scale.
