Water Crisis Eases in Karachi as Electricity Restored at NEK Pumping Station

KARACHI: The water crisis triggered by a major power outage at the North East Karachi (NEK) Pumping Station has begun to subside following the restoration of electricity late Sunday night. Water supply to several affected parts of the city has officially resumed.

The Incident

According to a spokesperson for the Water Corporation, the disruption began at approximately 10:30 AM on Sunday when a central K-Electric cable serving the NEK Pumping Station was stolen. This theft led to a complete suspension of power, bringing all operational activities at the station to a standstill.

Affected Areas

The sudden halt in pumping caused significant water shortages across various neighborhoods, including Saddar, Clifton, Chanesar Town, Surjani Town, and New Karachi.

Restoration Efforts

Following the incident, joint technical teams from K-Electric and the Water Corporation worked through the day to repair the damage. Electricity was finally restored late at night, and pumping operations were immediately reactivated.

Current Status

The Water Corporation has confirmed that water supply is being restored to the affected areas in phases. Officials expect the supply to return to normal pressure across all impacted localities shortly as the system stabilizes.
