KARACHI: In a major move to enhance aviation safety and prevent bird strikes near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, the Commissioner of Karachi, Hassan Naqvi, chaired a high-level meeting resulting in strict operational restrictions on hotels and marriage halls located within the airport’s funnel zone. As part of this initiative, authorities thoroughly reviewed a targeted list of 25 to 30 hotels, restaurants, and marriage halls situated within a 4-kilometer radius of the airport. To tackle the issue, nighttime outdoor dining and the open dumping of food or waste have been strictly prohibited. Establishments are now mandated to fully pack their waste in polythene bags and transport it exclusively to designated collection points.
Furthermore, business owners are required to improve local sanitation protocols and appoint dedicated sanitary staff to deter scavenging birds like kites, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. To ensure effective implementation, the Deputy Commissioners of Malir and Korangi have been directed to submit a comprehensive risk-mitigation report within three weeks. This high-profile meeting saw participation from key officials representing the Pakistan Airports Authority, the Solid Waste Management Board, and the Faisal Cantonment Board.
