KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has expressed severe frustration over persistent delays in the Mustafa Amir murder case, questioning why key stakeholders appear reluctant to advance the trial. During a hearing on a petition seeking a speedy trial, startling administrative and procedural roadblocks came to light, including a vacant Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) bench that is currently non-functional because the presiding judge’s tenure has concluded, leaving the SHC questioning who to direct for expediting proceedings. Furthermore, according to the jail superintendent’s report, the prime accused, Armaghan, has actively refused to receive court notices while in custody. Addressing this, Justice Iqbal Kalhoro remarked that while courts typically receive pleas from defendants rushing their trials, this case presents a puzzling lack of momentum, noting that defense counsels cannot appear without their client’s instructions when the accused deliberately dodges service. Consequently, the SHC has ordered fresh notices to be issued to the accused and adjourned the hearing until October 13, following the deceased victim’s mother approaching the high court to contest unjustified delays, despite previous ATC reports having pinned the blame on the accused and his legal representation.
