Sindh Conducts First Scientific Autopsy on Pet Cat, Marking a Milestone in Veterinary Medicine

KARACHI: The Sindh Animal Disease Surveillance Centre (SADSC) has successfully performed the province’s first-ever scientific post-mortem on a domestic pet, marking a major advancement in Sindh’s veterinary healthcare, disease surveillance, and scientific research capabilities under government initiatives.

Case Details & Findings

The subject of this landmark procedure was a two-month-old Persian kitten named Leonidas. During the scientific autopsy, experts uncovered significant medical insights, including fluid accumulation in the lungs, liver enlargement, internal abdominal bleeding, and clear evidence of an immune system reaction. Veterinary specialists ultimately determined that the primary cause of death was an adverse reaction resulting from an incompatible blood transfusion.

Leadership Remarks

Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, congratulated the livestock department and veterinary experts, terming the scientific autopsy a major breakthrough for veterinary medicine in the province. He emphasized that the government is modernizing the veterinary sector through science, innovation, and institutional reform, which will further strengthen diagnostic facilities for both pets and livestock.

Echoing these sentiments, Minister for Livestock Muhammad Ali Malkani noted that Sindh is steadily stepping into a leadership role in animal disease surveillance and veterinary diagnostics, with laboratory capacities and scientific skills being upgraded to match international standards. Furthermore, Livestock Secretary Kazim Jatoi and Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah praised the professionalism and dedication of the veterinary team, highlighting that enhancing institutional capacity will continually improve animal welfare and evidence-based healthcare services across the region.
