Red Line Project Negligence: Court Issues Notices on PKR 170M Damages Claim

KARACHI: A Senior Civil Judge in Malir has issued formal notices to key stakeholders in connection with a PKR 172.12 million (over 17 crore rupees) damages suit filed over a fatal road accident. The tragedy, which occurred in January, was allegedly caused by a lack of safety measures, poor lighting, and unmarked barriers during construction work on the Karachi Red Line bus project.

The incident took place when a citizen named Shahid tragically lost his life, while his wife and child sustained injuries, after crashing into an unlit, unflagged concrete barrier in the middle of Jinnah Avenue late at night. According to the petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Usman Farooq, the site lacked mandatory safety warnings, reflectors, and functional street lighting, pointing to gross negligence by the project executors. The Sindh Government, Malir Cantonment Board, the Red Line Project Director, and the construction contractor have been named as respondents in the lawsuit.

In response to the petition, the Malir court has formally summoned all respondents to appear for the hearing scheduled for September 21. The victim’s family, who lost their sole breadwinner, is seeking PKR 172,120,000 in compensation for the administrative negligence that led to the fatal accident.
