Pakistan Railways Unveils Karachi Rohri Track Upgrade Plan

KARACHI: Pakistan Railways has finalized a temporary operational plan to facilitate the upcoming track upgrade between Karachi and Rohri. To minimize disruption while modernizing the infrastructure, the project will be executed simultaneously across 5 to 6 work sections, each spanning approximately 60 kilometers.

During construction, train speeds will be capped at a maximum of 45 km/h within active work zones, and both railway tracks are proposed to remain closed for 8 to 10 hours daily to expedite the work. To manage connectivity during this period, a restricted daily schedule of 4 passenger trains will operate—consisting of one to Peshawar, two to Rawalpindi, and one to Lahore—alongside 8 freight trains permitted to run daily for cargo movement. However, due to single-line operations and ongoing construction, passenger journey times between Karachi and Rohri are expected to increase by an additional 5 to 10 hours. Pakistan Railways is actively reviewing these alternative proposals to maintain essential services while executing vital infrastructure enhancements.
