KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the southern parts of the country, warning that a low-intensity heatwave could grip the region from April 29 to May 3. Meteorologists have cautioned that temperatures in some areas could surge past a scorching 52°C.
The El Niño Factor
According to the latest advisory, there is a 61% probability of El Niño becoming active between May and July. Anjum Nazir Zaigham, Deputy Director of PMD, stated that sea surface temperatures are currently 0.5°C above normal. Once this deviation reaches 0.8°C, the transition to El Niño will be officially confirmed. El Niño typically leads to higher than average temperatures in Pakistan, reduced wind speeds, and drought-like conditions in specific regions.
Regional Impact and Forecast
While southern Punjab, Upper Sindh, and Southeast Balochistan usually see temperatures between 43°C and 45°C during May and June, current data shows these areas are already experiencing temperatures 2°C to 4°C above normal. In contrast to the scorching south, the upper parts of Pakistan are expected to witness two consecutive weather systems. The first system will affect the region from April 27 to April 29, while the second is expected between May 3 and May 5. These western disturbances are likely to bring a slight relief, dropping temperatures by 2°C to 4°C in the northern regions.
Monitoring the Situation
The PMD has assured the public that the situation is being monitored closely. While the upcoming heatwave is currently categorized as “low intensity,” the department has pledged to issue timely updates if the conditions escalate into a severe heatwave. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours as the country enters its hottest months of the year.
