ICC Puts Bangladesh on Standby Amid Fears of Pakistan’s World Cup Boycott

NEW DELHI – As uncertainty looms over Pakistan’s participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Indian media reports suggest that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has directed Bangladesh to remain ready as a potential replacement. The reports emerge amidst heightening tensions and panic within Indian media circles regarding the financial and logistical fallout if Pakistan decides to boycott the mega event.

The Bangladesh-Scotland Twist

The situation is layered with irony, as Bangladesh was previously sidelined from the original lineup. Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed security concerns regarding playing in India and requested their matches be moved to Sri Lanka. The ICC reportedly rejected this request, replacing Bangladesh with Scotland for the tournament. However, Indian media now claims that the ICC is reconsidering Bangladesh as a “Plan B” should Pakistan withdraw in a show of solidarity with their neighboring board.

Pakistan’s Stance and Financial Stakes

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the evolving situation. The PCB has termed the ICC’s initial treatment of Bangladesh as biased and has conditioned Pakistan’s participation on government approval.

The stakes are exceptionally high for the ICC. The Pakistan-India clash is scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, and according to media reports, this single fixture typically generates nearly 60% of the total revenue for the entire tournament.

Tournament Outlook

The ICC T20 World Cup is set to take place from February 7 to March 8, 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Under the current Hybrid Model, Pakistan is scheduled to play all its matches in Sri Lanka. A final decision regarding Pakistan’s participation is expected to be announced by the federal government this coming Friday or Monday.
