Diphtheria Outbreak in Sindh: Over a Dozen Children Lost, Health Experts Urge Timely Vaccination

A severe outbreak of diphtheria has raised serious public health concerns across Sindh, resulting in the tragic deaths of 13 children at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital (NIPA) in Karachi this year. Out of 30 confirmed cases treated at the facility, the fatalities highlight a worrying resurgence of the highly contagious bacterial infection. Nationwide data from January to June indicates 308 suspected cases, with Sindh recording the highest provincial burden (113 cases), followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (87), Balochistan (64), Punjab (35), Islamabad (7), and Gilgit-Baltistan (2).

Key Medical Insights & Symptoms

Health experts emphasize that diphtheria is a highly contagious disease transmitted easily among children. Early warning signs typically include swollen neck glands and the formation of a grey membrane in the throat, which can progress to severe symptoms such as high fever, intense throat pain, and acute breathing difficulties. Medical professionals issue a stern warning that ignoring these initial symptoms can prove fatal, making immediate medical intervention critical for young patients.

Prevention and the Role of Immunization

Diphtheria is entirely preventable through timely vaccination. The National Immunization Program provides essential vaccines against multiple life-threatening conditions—including tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, Hib, pneumonia, measles, and rubella. Because infants and young children possess developing immune systems, they are exceptionally vulnerable to infectious illnesses. Consequently, health authorities have strongly appealed to parents to strictly adhere to recommended immunization schedules, stressing that completing all vaccination courses not only safeguards individual children but also halts wider community transmission and prevents severe complications, disabilities, and deaths.
