KARACHI: Following the directives of the city administration, a major crackdown has been initiated against buildings failing to implement mandatory fire safety measures. In the first phase of this operation, a prominent private plaza on Tariq Road was sealed for non-compliance.
High-Level Safety Audit Meeting
The action follows a high-level meeting chaired by the Commissioner of Karachi to review the safety audits of public and private buildings. During the session, the Commissioner issued strict orders to immediately seal any structure found lacking essential fire protection systems.
Current Progress of Safety Audits
Deputy Commissioners provided detailed briefings on the ongoing safety surveys in their respective districts. The key findings revealed that a total of 775 buildings have been audited across the city. Out of these, 197 buildings are showing partial compliance while 285 buildings are currently in the process of implementing major safety improvements.
Mandatory Requirements
The Commissioner emphasized that all commercial buildings must ensure the installation of functional fire alarms, fire extinguishers, clear emergency exit signage, and smoke detectors without delay.
“Buildings failing to meet these emergency safety standards will face immediate sealing,” the Commissioner warned during the briefing.
The Gravity of the Situation
The crackdown comes amid alarming statistics showing that 80% of buildings in Karachi lack proper fire safety infrastructure. This negligence has led to frequent fire incidents and loss of lives. While global standards require rigorous post-construction inspections, Karachi has historically suffered from a lack of monitoring mechanisms. The administration now aims to break this cycle by holding shopping malls, factories, and residential complexes accountable to prevent future tragedies.
