Karachi Tech Students Invent Low-Cost Hazard Alert System

KARACHI: Students at the Aligarh Institute of Technology (AIT) in Karachi have developed a cost-effective, real-time safety system named “Ignition Alert”. Created by second-year Computer Information Technology students Syeda Um-e-Kulsoom and Zeeshan Ahmed Mirza—under the supervision of Ms. Shahida Muqeem—the device is designed to detect fires, smoke, and gas leaks early, helping to prevent major accidents and save lives.

The system functions by continuously monitoring the surrounding environment and immediately triggering both an audible alarm and a clear on-screen warning message the moment smoke, gas, or fire risks are detected. Because it is built using low-cost, readily available electronic components, the device is affordable and accessible for everyday households as well as small businesses. This versatility makes it highly beneficial for installation in diverse locations, including homes, factories, petrol pumps, shops, commercial markets, and warehouses.

Highlighting the success of the project, faculty supervisor Ms. Shahida Muqeem noted that the invention serves as a prime example of how technical education can be practically applied to solve real-world safety challenges and protect both lives and property.
