YouTube has rolled out one of its most-requested features, introducing custom thumbnail support for YouTube Shorts to help content creators enhance their channel branding and video engagement. Under this update, YouTube Partner Program (YPP) creators can now upload custom images as thumbnails for their Shorts, moving past the previous limitation of selecting a random video frame. Additionally, desktop users can now choose from three AI-suggested thumbnail options for their Shorts, while mobile users retain the ability to select specific video frames. To further assist creators, YouTube has expanded its AI-driven “Ask Studio” tool, enabling them to receive AI-generated recommendations for thumbnail designs, color schemes, layouts, and overall styles. Eligible creators with verified accounts adhering to community guidelines can easily update their thumbnails by navigating to YouTube Studio, selecting the Content section, editing the respective Short, uploading or choosing an image, and saving the changes. This update aims to give creators greater creative control and a more professional, uniform aesthetic across their video content.
