KARACHI: The menace of heavy traffic continues to haunt Karachi’s roads as two brothers were among three people killed in separate road accidents involving a trailer and a water tanker near Karimabad and Baloch Colony.
The Karimabad Tragedy
In a heartbreaking incident near the Karimabad Furniture Market, two brothers—identified as 22-year-old Atif and 20-year-old Tabish, sons of Mehmood—lost their lives when a speeding trailer hit their motorcycle. The brothers, residents of F.B. Area Block 16, were heading to their tailor to collect their new clothes for Eid-ul-Fitr. The victims were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by Chhipa ambulances, but both succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The grieving father, a Grade-2 government employee, shared that his sons were hardworking students who also worked as AC technicians to support the family. The mother, devastated by the loss, questioned how such heavy vehicles are allowed to crush citizens with impunity. She expressed deep pain over the fact that they currently lack the financial resources to transport the bodies to their ancestral hometown in Hafizabad, Punjab, for burial.
Police Action
Head Muharrir of Azizabad Police Station, Muhammad Haseeb, stated that the accident involved a collision between a motorcycle and a trailer. While one trailer driver and cleaner managed to escape the scene, police have detained another driver on suspicion. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify the exact vehicle responsible for the brothers’ deaths and will proceed with legal action based on the family’s statement.
Second Fatality at Baloch Colony Flyover
In a separate incident on the Baloch Colony Flyover within the limits of Tipu Sultan Police Station, a man was killed and another critically injured. Witnesses reported that a speeding vehicle hit a Suzuki pickup, causing two passengers to fall onto the road. A water tanker coming from behind then ran over them. The victims were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) via Edhi ambulance; however, their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Growing Public Outcry
The elder brother of the deceased teenagers lashed out at the authorities, noting that freight vehicles have become enemies of the citizens. He pointed out the irony that while motorcyclists are frequently fined for minor infractions, no strict action is taken against the “dumper and tanker mafia” that continues to cause fatal accidents on main arteries like Shahrah-e-Pakistan.
