KARACHI: In a tragic incident at the Landhi Babar Market Cattle Colony, 38 cattle worth millions of rupees died after consuming toxic feed (husk and bread crumbs). According to a press release issued by Shakir Umar Gujjar, President of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan, the incident occurred at the farm of a local dairy farmer, Mubashir. The toxic fodder led to the immediate death of 18 expensive buffaloes and cows, while 20 others had to be slaughtered in an emergency state to prevent further loss.
Regarding the current situation, 22 more cattle are currently fighting for their lives, and the total financial loss is estimated to be in the millions of PKR. The Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association has held the Sindh Livestock Department and the KMC Veterinary Department fully responsible for the tragedy. Mr. Gujjar pointed out that, despite the scale of the loss, no representative from these departments has visited the affected farm to provide assistance or investigate the matter.
The Association has called upon the Sindh Government to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future. Their primary demands include implementing a licensing system for feed mills, similar to the model used in Punjab, making toxin-level checking mandatory for all cattle feed, and providing immediate financial compensation to the affected farmer for his massive loss.
