Strong Monsoon System Activates in Sindh; Karachi to Expect Drizzle

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert for heavy rainfall, windstorms, and thunderstorms across Sindh as a potent monsoon system activates over the province. Driven by continuous moisture from the Arabian Sea and coupled with a western wave affecting the country’s upper and central regions, this weather system is expected to bring much-needed relief by breaking the ongoing hot and humid spell.

Under the influence of this system, the provincial metropolis, Karachi, is expected to remain partly to fully cloudy and humid over the next three days, with light drizzle and showers anticipated during the morning and night hours, especially around coastal areas. Meanwhile, immediate weather activity featuring gusty winds and thunderstorms is predicted for districts like Ghotki, Qambar Shahdadkot, and Dadu.

The weather system will intensify significantly between July 23 and July 24, bringing widespread intermittent windstorms and thunderstorms across a majority of districts, including Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Tharparkar, where precipitation could range from moderate to heavy downpours. Similar stormy conditions and periodic rains will also impact Dadu, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Thatta, and Sujawal during this period. While the PMD has cautioned that strong windstorms and lightning could pose a risk to vulnerable structures, the overall system is highly expected to lower temperatures and significantly reduce the intensity of the current heatwave across Sindh.
