KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its financial sector with Hugo Bank—a joint venture between Pakistani and Singaporean investors—securing approval from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to launch controlled pilot operations. As the country’s first digital retail bank, Hugo Bank will leverage advanced technology to offer innovative financial services. Backed by the facilitation of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), this development marks a significant step forward in boosting foreign investment, enhancing financial inclusion, and modernizing Pakistan’s digital banking landscape.
The initiative introduces Hugo Bank as Pakistan’s pioneering digital retail bank, bridging traditional banking gaps through cutting-edge technology. During the initial pilot phase, the bank will rigorously test system security, operational efficiency, user experience, and regulatory compliance before a full public rollout. Built on a strategic partnership between investors from Pakistan and Singapore, the venture highlights growing international confidence in Pakistan’s fintech sector, while the Special Investment Facilitation Council plays a crucial role in streamlining regulatory hurdles and expediting institutional coordination, as acknowledged by Hugo Bank CEO Asim Hasan.
