Sindh Laboratory Flags Faulty Syringes As Substandard

KARACHI: The Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory (SDTL) has declared two batches of auto-disable (AD) syringes—specifically the 3 ml and 5 ml variants—as substandard following rigorous laboratory analysis. Manufactured by a pharmaceutical company based in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, these syringes failed to meet the required standards under the Medical Devices Rules, 2017. Testing revealed that their integrated auto-disable and anti-reuse protection mechanisms were ineffective, raising serious concerns over unsafe injections. Medical experts have warned that such compromised safety features significantly increase the risk of transmitting fatal blood-borne infections, including HIV and Hepatitis B and C. In response to these findings, SDTL Director General Adnan Rizvi confirmed that official test reports have been forwarded to the Drug Inspector Karachi East and the Secretary of the Quality Control Board for immediate legal and administrative action.
