KARACHI – Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has assured transporters of the provincial government’s full cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by the recent hike in petroleum prices. The assurance came during a telephonic conversation between the Senior Minister and Malik Shahzad Awan, President of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance. During the call, Memon was briefed on the escalating difficulties faced by the transport sector following the increase in fuel costs.
Sharjeel Memon acknowledged that the Sindh government is well aware of the hurdles facing the sector, noting that fuel price hikes are a national issue impacting every industry. The Minister emphasized that the transport sector serves as the backbone of the national economy and its grievances cannot be overlooked. The provincial government is seriously considering actionable proposals to provide relief, including consultations with relevant authorities regarding potential concessions in toll taxes and other provincial levies. Memon further stated that a joint strategy is being developed to find sustainable solutions to the transporters’ problems.
Malik Shahzad Awan, President of the Goods Transport Alliance, highlighted that operating transport services has become increasingly unsustainable. He confirmed that the alliance has requested relief from both the Sindh and Federal governments regarding toll taxes and other provincial levies. The Transport Alliance has summoned a consultative meeting of its coordination committee today at 3:00 PM, after which they will announce their future course of action.
