KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly session, convened under the chairmanship of Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah, addressed several critical legislative matters and public welfare issues. A central development was the passage of a resolution urging the federal government to abolish the levy tax, after Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar clarified that while the province cannot unilaterally terminate it, Sindh can formally demand its withdrawal from federal authorities. In a historic milestone, Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed tabled the Christian Family Law 2026—the first major update to the framework in 150 years—which received bipartisan support from lawmaker Muhammad Farooq before being referred to the relevant standing committee, with Farooq also joining the minority affairs committee. Additionally, the assembly discussed a resolution introduced by Muhammad Farooq calling for life insurance and welfare policies for public school teachers, while MPA Sajjad Ali raised serious concerns regarding alleged police brutality against political workers. Following these proceedings, the session was adjourned by the Speaker to reconvene the next day at 2:00 PM.
