KARACHI: The recent hike in petroleum prices by the government has dealt a severe blow to the fishing community in Sindh, threatening the livelihoods of thousands who depend on the sea.
Escalating Operational Costs
According to a statement issued by the Coastal Media Center Ibrahim Hyderi, the surge in diesel and petrol prices has plunged the local fishing industry into a deep crisis. Since fishing boats rely heavily on diesel, the operational cost of a single trip into the sea has multiplied, making it nearly impossible for many to continue their work.
A Multifaceted Struggle
The statement highlighted that fishermen were already struggling with persistent inflation, marine pollution, and a noticeable decrease in the availability of fish near the shores. These factors, combined with the fuel hike, have made the profession unsustainable for the average worker.
Grounded Boats and Social Impact
The high cost of fuel has forced many small-scale fishermen to anchor their boats permanently. This standstill is not just an economic issue but a humanitarian one, as families face the threat of starvation.
“The stoves in the homes of many coastal residents are going cold,” a spokesperson stated. “The local fishing economy is under immense pressure, and without intervention, we are looking at a dangerous rise in poverty and unemployment across the coastal belt.”
Demands for Government Relief
In response to the crisis, the fishing community has made an urgent appeal to the government for diesel subsidies specifically targeted at the fishing sector and special relief packages to help offset the rising costs of operation. Fishermen warned that if the situation remains unchanged, the resulting social and economic fallout in Sindh’s coastal regions will be catastrophic.
