Red Line BRT: Work to Resume Within 48 Hours, Says Sharjeel Memon

KARACHI – Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that the provincial government is making strenuous efforts to resume construction work on the ambitious Red Line BRT project within the next 48 hours. In an exclusive conversation, the minister addressed the prolonged delays that have caused significant inconvenience to the citizens of Karachi. He emphasized that the Red Line project is currently the only major infrastructure work resulting in public distress, a situation the government is keen to rectify.

Explaining the reasons behind the recent halt in construction, Memon revealed that the Sindh government had repeatedly warned the contractors of Lot 1 and Lot 2 to adhere to the agreed timelines. Due to persistent unsatisfactory performance and failure to meet standards, the government officially terminated the contracts. The minister clarified that the decision to scrap the contracts was taken in full consultation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the primary funding partner for the project.

“The Sindh government is committed to completing this corridor as quickly as possible,” Memon stated. He reassured the public that the transition to new arrangements is being fast-tracked to ensure work restarts by the weekend. On a more positive note, the Senior Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress on Shahrah-e-Bhutto, announcing that the road is expected to be fully opened for public use by next month, providing much-needed relief to commuters.
