PTA Issues Alert Against Fraudulent SIM Issuance

KARACHI – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a comprehensive advisory for citizens to protect themselves from the unauthorized and fraudulent issuance of SIM cards. In an effort to curb illegal activities and identity theft, the regulatory body has urged the public to exercise extreme caution when obtaining new mobile connections.

Key Guidelines for Citizens

Avoid Unauthorized Sellers: Citizens are advised not to acquire “free” SIM cards offered at makeshift stalls in streets, intersections, or local markets. Use Official Channels: For new connections or MNP (Mobile Number Portability), only visit authorized customer service centers or official franchises of mobile operators. Biometric Security: The PTA warned against providing biometric verification in exchange for free SIMs, as scammers may use the data to register multiple unauthorized numbers under a single CNIC. Monitor Registered SIMs: It is essential to ensure that no SIM card is registered in your name without your explicit consent.

Immediate Action Required

The PTA further advised citizens to check the number of SIMs registered against their CNIC regularly. If any extra or unused SIMs are found, they should be blocked immediately to prevent potential misuse in criminal activities.

Karachi Fact Note: To check the number of SIMs registered against your CNIC, you can visit the PTA SIM Information Website or send your CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 via SMS.
