KARACHI: In a major leap toward energy self-sufficiency, Pakistan is set to begin local manufacturing of lithium batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and solar systems, with the first production plant nearing operations in Karachi.
Key Highlights of the Project
The Engineering Development Board (EDB) and the Pakistan Solar Association (PSA) recently confirmed the progress of this landmark initiative. Here are the essential details: The plant is being established in the Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi. The project is spearheaded by EV Technologies. The facility will initially have a capacity of 4 MW, producing approximately 2,000 batteries per month. According to Huma Khattak, CEO of EV Technologies, the machinery has been ordered, and production is expected to commence within the next 2 to 3 months.
Policy and Incentives
During a high-level meeting, EDB Chief Executive Hammad Mansoor revealed that a new policy framework has been submitted to the Ministry of Industries and Production. To support local manufacturers, the government plans to coordinate with the National Tariff Board to reduce taxes on the import of raw battery components. Final approval is expected to be incorporated into the Federal Budget 2026-27.
Why It Matters
The shift toward local production aims to drastically reduce Pakistan’s reliance on expensive imported batteries. As the global energy landscape shifts, Mr. Mansoor emphasized that the future depends on battery storage, making domestic production for solar units and EVs “inevitable” for economic stability.
