Modern Water Filtration Plants to be Installed at Gharo and Pipri Pumping Stations

KARACHI – In a major move to address the city’s water quality issues, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to establish state-of-the-art water filtration plants at the Gharo and Pipri pumping stations. The signing ceremony was held with Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, attending as the chief guest. High-level delegates from the European Union, including the Ambassador to Pakistan Riina Kionka, Head of Cooperation Jeroen Willems, and Loan Officer Marco Arryn, were also in attendance.

The project involves an infrastructure upgrade where modern filtration systems will be installed at these two primary pumping stations to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water. Highlighting the economic significance, Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that this marks the return of EIB investment to Pakistan after a 10-year hiatus, describing it as a positive and welcoming development. This agreement is a crucial step toward ensuring public health by meeting international water quality standards and significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases for Karachi’s residents.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor emphasized that this partnership is a vital part of the city’s commitment to providing basic necessities through international collaboration and modern engineering solutions.
