KARACHI: Under the “Clean Port, Safe Sea” campaign, authorities have successfully removed 58,000 kilograms of waste from the Karachi Port within a span of two weeks, officials said.
The cleanliness drive has been intensified following direct instructions from the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, effective measures are actively being pursued to eliminate marine pollution and promote eco-friendly ports across the country.
Campaign Breakdown
The massive two-week operation deployed significant human and logistical resources to tackle the floating debris. During this period, 58,000 kilograms of waste was collected, utilizing 159 vessels and a dedicated team of 487 workers.
Threat to Marine Life
Federal Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized that every possible measure will be taken to protect marine life and the environment. He confirmed that the collected garbage is being disposed of safely in accordance with environmental standards.
“Plastic waste has become a severe threat to marine life, making integrated and coordinated actions absolutely indispensable,” the Minister warned.
Boosting Port Efficiency
The Minister added that the ongoing cleanup campaign will not only restore marine health but will also significantly enhance the operational efficiency of the Karachi Port. He reiterated that maintaining clean, safe, and environment-friendly ports remains a top priority for the government.
