KARACHI – Intense heat has shattered an eight-year record in Karachi, with at least 10 people reported dead across various localities on Tuesday. Rescue officials suspect the fatalities are linked to the ongoing severe heatwave and drug-related complications.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
According to meteorological data, Karachi experienced its hottest day since 2018 today. The scorching conditions have severely impacted daily life, leading to several cases of heatstroke and sudden deaths across the metropolitan.
Details of the Fatalities
Rescue services, including the Chhipa Foundation and Edhi Foundation, reported recovering bodies and transporting critically ill individuals to hospitals throughout the day. In Baldia’s Sparco Road, a 55-year-old man identified as Abdul Wadood was found dead near Tayyaba Mosque, while 70-year-old Zaheer was found deceased in his home in Maripur. Officials believe both succumbed to the extreme heat. In North Karachi Sector 5-D/3, the body of a 42-year-old unidentified man was recovered from Usmania Mosque; Edhi officials stated he had entered the mosque for prayers when he collapsed.
Further reports confirmed that three men, aged 35, 36, and 50, were found dead in Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, and DHA Phase 8. Chhipa officials suggested these deaths might be linked to drug overdoses exacerbated by the weather. Additionally, four individuals were found in critical condition in areas including Boat Basin, Liaquatabad No. 10, Jamali Bridge, and Scheme 33. Despite being rushed to Jinnah and Abbasi Shaheed Hospitals, they passed away during treatment.
Current Situation
While formal medical examinations are pending to confirm the exact causes of death, the sudden surge in fatalities coincides with the record-breaking heat. Citizens are strongly advised to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary sun exposure during peak hours to prevent further casualties.
