KARACHI: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has clarified that the recent decision to replace the Governor of Sindh was not an abrupt move but a pre-determined component of the power-sharing agreement between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Speaking at a foundation stone-laying ceremony in District East, the Mayor addressed political speculations, stating that the transition follows the initial understanding reached during the formation of the current government.
Infrastructure Development in District East The ceremony marked the commencement of the construction and rehabilitation of a major road link stretching from Pehlwan Goth (near Habib University) to Race Course Road, Safoora. The project involves a 4.26 km dual carriageway featuring a 36-foot wide modern road designed to improve traffic flow. It also includes the installation of a contemporary drainage system and new sewerage lines to prevent urban flooding, along with modern street lighting throughout the stretch.
Traffic Management and Future Projects Acknowledging the current traffic woes, Wahab noted that the ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction on University Road has caused significant inconvenience. However, he provided a timeline for relief, announcing that the Karimabad Underpass will be opened to traffic immediately after Eid.
Political Counter-Critique During his address, the Mayor took a sharp swipe at Jamaat-e-Islami, accusing them of political hypocrisy. He emphasized that while managing development in a megacity like Karachi is a monumental challenge, the administration is currently executing projects across all seven districts and 25 towns of the city without discrimination.
