KARACHI: In a bid to protect commuters from financial exploitation during the festive season, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has ordered an immediate province-wide crackdown on transporters charging exorbitant fares ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Minister has issued strict directives to the Sindh Police, district administrations, National Highway Authority (NHA), Traffic Police, and the Transport Department to take stern action against violators within their respective jurisdictions. He further mandated that progress reports on these operations be submitted on a daily basis.
Authorities have been told to act without discrimination against any transporter found charging rates above the government-fixed fares. Minister Memon emphasized that self-imposed fare hikes by certain transporters place an unfair financial burden on citizens, and officials must remain active on the ground to ensure immediate redressal of public complaints.
“Providing maximum convenience to the public and preventing unauthorized fare hikes is the primary responsibility of the relevant institutions,” stated Sharjeel Inam Memon. He added that the government’s goal is to ensure that every passenger can travel safely to their hometowns for Eid without facing illegal overcharging.
