Education Dept Moves to Halt Illegal Construction at Jamia Millia College Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh College Education Department has formally requested the provincial authorities to intervene and stop illegal construction activities on the grounds of the historic Jamia Millia Government College. The move comes as land grabbers continue to encroach upon the college’s premises, specifically targeting the sports ground. Despite ongoing construction by the “land mafia,” the department has now intensified efforts to secure the educational property.

Official Actions and Directives

Gulab Rai, the Regional Director of Colleges Sindh, has dispatched formal letters to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Korangi and the Director of Anti-Encroachment Korangi. The letters urge both authorities to take immediate physical action to halt the unauthorized construction within the college’s playground. This decisive action follows an investigation by a four-member inquiry committee that visited the site on April 20 to verify the claims.

Background of the Dispute

The issue was brought to light by the Principal of Jamia Millia College, who filed a formal complaint regarding organized encroachment. Following the complaint, the investigative committee confirmed that illegal structures were indeed being erected within the college boundaries. The Regional Director’s correspondence emphasized that these findings validate the principal’s concerns, noting that the encroachment poses a direct threat to the college’s infrastructure.

“The committee’s preliminary findings confirm that land grabbers are actively constructing on college property. Immediate steps are necessary in the best interest of the institution and its students,” the Regional Director stated.

The College Education Department has stressed that protecting the campus environment is vital for the students, and any delay in law enforcement action could lead to further permanent loss of the college’s land.
