KARACHI: Renowned economist Dr. Qaiser Bengali has stated that effective governance—not an increase in the number of provinces—is the key to running the country. Speaking at the Karachi University Department of History’s “MHS Speaks Forum,” he warned that Pakistan’s economic system is heading toward collapse, driven by expenditures that far exceed revenues and a continuous cycle of debt accumulation.
Dr. Bengali emphasized that corruption is driven by individuals rather than institutions and noted that constitutional provisions regarding the devolution of power are not being fully implemented. He also cautioned against viewing Sindh and Karachi as the sole targets of the debate surrounding new provinces, noting that Karachi is already fragmented administratively.
Prof. Dr. Hina Khan echoed these sentiments, calling the debate over new provinces in Sindh highly sensitive. She stressed that public sentiment must be respected to prevent weakening the province further, arguing that proper assembly representation can resolve public issues without requiring territorial division.
