KARACHI – In a shocking revelation of rapid illegal construction, a seven-story building has been completed in just 70 days in the Lyari neighborhood, posing a severe threat to human lives. A citizen, Zahid Hussain, has approached the Sindh High Court (SHC), filing a petition against the unauthorized project located on Plot No. 25, Mirza Adam Khan Road, Agra Taj Colony. The petitioner has named the Sindh Government, Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Anti-Encroachment Department, Land Department, and builders Shahjahan and Shahnawaz as respondents.
The petitioner maintains that the structure was built in blatant violation of SBCA regulations and building codes, alleging that substandard materials were used during the lightning-fast construction. This makes the building a potential death trap for future occupants and neighbors. The plea further highlights a concerning pattern of administrative apathy, stating that the SBCA was formally notified multiple times as the floors were being added. However, the authority reportedly turned a blind eye, allowing the construction to reach completion without any intervention.
Drawing a grim comparison, the petition references the recent disaster in Baghdadi, Lyari, where a building collapse resulted in the tragic death of 13 citizens. The petitioner argued that such unregulated constructions are “ticking time bombs” that pose an imminent threat to public safety.
Through this legal action, the court has been urged to issue a writ for the immediate demolition of the illegal seven-story structure. Furthermore, the petitioner has requested the court to hold SBCA officials accountable for their negligence and to enforce a strict mechanism that binds the authority to take proactive measures against unauthorized constructions across the city.
