A major controversy has erupted in international football following FIFA’s decision to suspend American forward Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban. Balogun had received a straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was set to rule him out of the round-of-16 clash against Belgium. However, following intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump, FIFA deferred the suspension for 12 months, allowing Balogun to play in the match—which the U.S. ultimately lost 1–4.
In response, the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), led by President Lise Klaveness, announced it is considering filing an official complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee, potentially merging it with an existing complaint regarding FIFA’s “Peace Prize” award to Trump. Meanwhile, UEFA and the Belgian Football Association have expressed strong concerns over FIFA’s decision, though FIFA has dismissed Belgium’s request for clarification as inadmissible.
