KARACHI: In a significant move to address the city’s growing burial space crisis, the Sindh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, has officially approved the establishment of a 500-acre mega graveyard in Karachi. The decision was part of a high-level meeting held at the CM House, where several key projects related to public relief, infrastructure, and administrative reforms were sanctioned for the fiscal year 2026-27.
Mega Graveyard Project
To tackle the shortage of burial spaces in the metropolis, the cabinet allocated 500 acres of land in Deh Meetha Ghar, District Malir. The land is valued at Rs. 13.5 million per acre, bringing the total cost to Rs. 6,750 million. The land will be handed over to the Local Government Department for immediate development.
Fuel Subsidy & Transport Relief
The cabinet extended the Peoples Motorcycle Fuel Subsidy Program until May 31, 2026. Currently, Rs. 2,000 is being provided per CNIC to over 548,000 beneficiaries, and Rs. 2 billion has been released for May 2026. Additionally, sales tax on motorcycle-based cab services has been slashed from 5% to 2% to support online gig workers and reduce ride cancellations.
Infrastructure Cess & Settlements
The cabinet reviewed the progress of the Sindh Development and Maintenance of Infrastructure Cess (Amendment) Act 2026. The deadline for legal settlements and withdrawal of cases has been extended to August 23, 2026. Over Rs. 18 billion in bank guarantees have already been encashed. A 0.80% discount was also announced for taxpayers who clear their dues early.
Human Rights & Legal Reforms
The Cabinet approved the Sindh Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill 2026, which will now be sent to the Provincial Assembly. The amendment integrates “Business and Human Rights” into the legal framework and increases the term for the Chairperson and members from 4 to 5 years. The commission is now authorized to set up offices across the province.
Administrative Decisions
A new Anti-Encroachment Tribunal will be established in the Shaheed Benazirabad Division to ensure the effective implementation of the Sindh Public Property Act 2010. Furthermore, the Cabinet moved to functionalize the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) by appointing Faisal Malik as Member Finance & Policy.
