ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to appoint Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) veteran leader Nihal Hashmi as the Governor of Sindh. The formal summary for his appointment has been forwarded to the President of Pakistan for final approval.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif moved the summary today. The Prime Minister also met with Mr. Hashmi to congratulate him on his upcoming role. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Advisor to the PM on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, and other senior officials.
A Veteran Political Career
Nihal Hashmi, a resident of Karachi, has a long-standing association with the PML-N. In the 1990s, he served as Advisor on Law and Justice to then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He later served as the President of PML-N Karachi in 2012 and was appointed General Secretary of PML-N Sindh in 2014. In 2015, he was elected as a Senator on a PML-N seat from Punjab.
Shift in Provincial Leadership
The move signals a change in the province’s top constitutional post, currently held by Kamran Khan Tessori of the MQM-P. While rumors regarding a change in the Sindh Governor’s house had been circulating in political and media circles for several days, this official summary marks a decisive development in the matter.
