KARACHI: A high-level meeting of the Agriculture Department, chaired by Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Hyder Shah, revealed a substantial growth in wheat production and cultivation area for the Rabi season 2025-26. The meeting focused on evaluating crop progress, production targets, and the facilities provided to local farmers.
Production and Support Overview
The Sindh government provided timely DAP and Urea fertilizers to 326,440 small-scale wheat farmers to boost per-acre yield. Consequently, the area under wheat cultivation rose from 3.08 million acres in 2024-25 to 3.66 million acres in 2025-26. This expansion has led to a major production boom, with the current season’s yield expected to reach 4.402 million tons compared to last year’s 3.542 million tons, marking a remarkable 24% increase.
Strategic Success and Food Security
Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah attributed this success to the provincial government’s farmer-friendly policies and effective strategy. He noted that the increased cultivation area is a testament to the growing confidence farmers have in government initiatives. The 24% boost in expected production is a direct result of active strategies and solid policy measures aimed at ensuring food security and agricultural stability in Sindh.
Ongoing Monitoring
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the agricultural sector, the Chief Secretary directed the Agriculture Department to maintain continuous monitoring until the harvest is complete. He emphasized providing all possible support to farmers to sustain this positive growth trend and ensure that the benefits of these policies reach the grassroots level.
