KARACHI: In a major crackdown on illegal trade, Pakistan Customs (JIAP and Enforcement Collectorate Karachi) has destroyed seized smuggled and hazardous goods worth over Rs 3.9 billion.
The disposal ceremony took place in an open area in Gadap, where a vast quantity of prohibited items was set on fire or crushed following legal protocols.
Details of Seized Items
The destroyed goods included a wide range of contraband and health-hazardous items, such as:
- Foreign Liquor and Beer Cans
- Prohibited Toys and Tobacco Products
- Counterfeit Cigarettes (Various Brands)
- Ajinomoto (MSG), Naswar, and Pan Prag
- Sheesha Flavors and Betel Nuts (Chalia)
A Commitment to Law Enforcement
Speaking at the event, Collector Customs Enforcement Karachi, Moinuddin Wani, stated that this is the third time within a year that the department has disposed of prohibited items after completing all legal formalities.
“While the Customs department auctions usable seized items to generate revenue, hazardous and prohibited goods are strictly destroyed. The disposal of cigarettes is carried out in compliance with both international and local laws,” Wani explained.
Challenges in the Field
The Collector highlighted that Customs teams often face violent resistance during anti-smuggling operations. Despite these dangers, enforcement officers continue their mission with dedication.
Notably, he mentioned that for the past five years, young female Customs officers have been actively participating on the front lines of these anti-smuggling campaigns. He also lauded the crucial support provided by law enforcement agencies, particularly the Sindh Rangers, in making these operations successful.
