KARACHI – The crisis of unannounced power outages in Karachi has intensified, leaving citizens helpless as a relentless heatwave continues to grip the metropolis. Long hours of electricity breakdown have severely disrupted domestic, commercial, and industrial activities across the city.
Regional Breakdown of the Crisis
District Central: Areas including Liaquatabad, F.B. Area, F.C. Area, and North Nazimabad are facing prolonged blackouts lasting several hours at a time.
District East: Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar have seen a significant decline in power supply stability.
District Malir & Scheme 33: In Khokhrapar, Malir Tanki, Saudabad, and Jafar-e-Tayyar, the unannounced load-shedding has exceeded 10 hours. Similarly, Scheme 33 residents report routine outages of 10 to 12 hours.
District West: The situation is most dire in Garden, Ramswamy, and Lyari, where locals claim they are without electricity for over 15 hours a day.
Public Outcry and K-Electric’s Silence
Despite being in the heart of the city’s commercial hub, areas in Saddar continue to suffer as K-Electric (KE) teams appear unable to rectify the frequent faults and supply gaps.
Residents express deep resentment, stating that they pay their electricity bills regularly yet continue to face both announced and unannounced load-shedding. Many have complained that there is no effective grievance redressal mechanism, leading to widespread public anger.
Impact on the City
The power crisis has led to significant economic losses as small businesses and industrial units struggle to operate. Moreover, the lack of electricity during peak summer heat has raised serious health concerns for the elderly and children. As of now, the power supply remains volatile, with no immediate relief in sight for the residents of the provincial capital.
