Sindh’s Solar Leap: PKR 18.2B Initiative to Empower 275,000 Homes by 2027

Project Scope and Financial Commitment

The landmark initiative carries a total financial outlay of PKR 18.2 billion (PKR 18,206,000,000) and targets 275,000 underprivileged families officially registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The project strategically splits its reach into two categories to maximize impact: it will power 132,000 off-grid households located in remote, desert, and mountainous regions, while also providing relief to 143,000 on-grid urban and semi-urban consumers who currently utilize between 0 to 100 units of electricity per month.

Technical Package and Current Deployment Status

To ensure sustainable relief, each eligible family is being equipped with a complete solar utility package consisting of a 180W solar panel, a high-efficiency lithium battery, a DC fan, and energy-saving LED lights. The deployment is already moving at a steady pace, with 11,571 solar home systems successfully installed across various districts. Active, large-scale installations are currently underway in several key regions, including Karachi, Ghotki, Umerkot, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Tharparkar, and Thatta.

Timeline, Execution, and Maintenance Framework

Initially launched in April 2025, the comprehensive provincial project is scheduled for full completion by June 2027. To guarantee operational efficiency, the Sindh Government has established a robust public-private framework; the National Energy & Transport Corporation is managing the supply chain for the solar kits, while the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) has been entrusted with the ground-level installation, technical maintenance, and the provisioning of a reliable two-year warranty for all distributed systems.
