KARACHI: In a major push to modernize provincial infrastructure, the Sindh Government has announced a series of landmark decisions to expand the public transport network, including the induction of new buses and the launch of fresh routes across the province. The decisions were finalized during a high-level meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The session focused on improving commuter facilities, empowering women through mobility, and scaling up the transport grid in both urban and rural Sindh.
Key Developments in the Expansion The People’s Bus Service will officially launch on the Sukkur-Shikarpur route next week, while upcoming phases will include routes connecting Khairpur to Rohri and Khairpur to Ranipur. Special planning is also underway for Hyderabad, with new services planned for the Haider Chowk to Kohsar and Hyderabad to Tando Allahyar routes. Furthermore, following Karachi’s lead, the government will soon distribute Pink Scooters to women in Sukkur and Hyderabad to enhance their mobility.
Green Energy and Fleet Upgrades For the upcoming financial year, the government has approved the purchase of Electric Vehicles (EV), Hybrid, and Double-Decker buses to meet the growing demand in Karachi and beyond. Minister Sharjeel Memon highlighted that work is rapidly progressing on charging stations and infrastructure for the upcoming EV Taxi and Pink Taxi services. All formalities for the EV taxi project are expected to be completed by the end of this month, promising new employment opportunities and eco-friendly travel options for citizens.
“Our top priority is to empower women and provide safe, affordable travel for everyone,” said Sharjeel Inam Memon. “By expanding the People’s Bus Service and introducing EV taxis, we are not just improving transport; we are modernizing the lifestyle of our citizens.”
