KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has taken up a petition challenging the rampant installation of illegal gantry boards and billboards across the city, seeking a response from the authorities by August 20.
The Legal Challenge
A local citizen approached the court against the placement of massive advertising structures in public spaces. The petition names several key stakeholders as respondents, including the Mayor of Karachi, Commissioner Karachi, TMC Saddar (Town Municipal Corporation), and the Karachi Traffic Engineering Bureau.
Key Locations and Allegations
The petitioner, represented by Advocate Nawaz Dahri, pointed out that illegal boards have been installed at prominent locations, including Metropole Hotel, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Punjab Chowrangi. The counsel argued that the occupation and commercial exploitation of public spaces constitute a direct violation of the fundamental rights of citizens. He further highlighted that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has already issued a clear verdict banning the installation of billboards on public property.
“Despite judicial orders, government institutions are facilitating the installation of commercial gantries under the guise of municipal permits,” Advocate Dahri stated in the petition.
Demands of the Petitioner
The petition seeks the court to declare the installation of commercial gantry structures on sidewalks and public properties in District South as illegal. It also requests an immediate stay order to stop the ongoing construction and installation of controversial gantry boards. Furthermore, the petitioner has prayed for a directive to remove and demolish all existing advertising structures within the jurisdiction of TMC Saddar.
The court has issued formal notices to all parties involved, demanding a detailed reply in the next hearing scheduled for August 20.
