KARACHI: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has stated that while accidents can happen anywhere, the growing number of drug addicts has become a significant challenge for the city. Speaking to the media during his visit to a private superstore in Clifton where a fire broke out, the Mayor confirmed that rescue operations are being strictly monitored. All relevant departments, including representatives from the Cantonment Board, are on-site performing their duties.
Mayor Wahab highlighted that emergency teams reached the spot immediately after the fire was reported. He confirmed that 24 to 25 people present inside the building, including the management staff, were successfully evacuated. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. To assist in the operation, water bowzers, fire tenders, and Rescue 1122 teams remained on standby to provide immediate medical or logistical aid.
The Mayor informed the press that the fire is now under control. They are currently removing grills to allow smoke to escape and creating pathways to clear the premises as quickly as possible. The store management has also confirmed that no employees are left inside the building. Addressing the jurisdiction, Wahab noted that while the area falls under the Cantonment Board, a fire safety audit had been previously conducted. However, a thorough investigation will still take place to determine the cause.
Drawing a parallel to the Gul Plaza incident, he mentioned that a judicial commission was formed for a transparent inquiry, and a similar factual report would be expected here. He added that Deputy Commissioners across the city are conducting fire safety audits. They even sealed a market in Saddar for failing to comply because sometimes tough decisions are necessary for the public interest.
The Mayor pointed out a peculiar hurdle in city safety: drug addicts. He noted that these individuals often enter damaged or burnt buildings to steal iron or scrap, which can lead to re-ignition of fires, as seen at Gul Plaza. He confirmed that the Interior Minister has been briefed and has directed the police to crack down on drug addicts and those involved in the narcotics trade.
Closing his briefing, Murtaza Wahab lauded the bravery of the firefighters. Whether it is Gul Plaza or the Export Processing Zone, the firefighters are always on the front lines. Their work is commendable and deserves full appreciation. He added that the KMC ensures the provision of necessary equipment to support their tireless efforts.
