KARACHI: A high-level investigation has officially commenced into the controversial arrest and court appearance of a notorious female drug peddler, Anum alias Pinky. The probe was initiated following orders from the Karachi Police Chief to determine why standard operating procedures (SOPs) were bypassed during the legal process.
Focus of the Investigation
The special inquiry team is tasked with scrutinizing the actions of the suspended SHO, Sub-Inspector (SI), and the involved police party. The investigation will specifically look into the breach of protocol regarding why the suspect was presented in court without handcuffs and without her face being covered, violating standard security measures. Furthermore, officials will investigate the procedural lapses that led to the suspect being presented in court in a manner that contradicted official regulations. The team has also decided to analyze CCTV footage from the Garden Police Station to observe how the suspect was detained, where she was kept, and her interactions with police officials during her stay.
Change in Inquiry Leadership
In a significant development, the inquiry has been transferred from SSP South Mahzoor Ali, and DIG West Irfan Ali Baloch has been appointed as the new Inquiry Officer to ensure a transparent probe. The Additional IGP, Azad Khan, issued an official notification for this appointment, directing the Inquiry Officer to determine the extent of negligence by the police personnel involved and submit a comprehensive report within three days.
The Background
The case gained attention after visuals of the suspect’s court appearance suggested “VIP treatment” or a lack of professional rigor by the Garden Police Station staff. The Karachi Police Chief had initially formed a team under SSP South, but the leadership was changed to maintain the integrity of the findings. The final report will decide the fate of the suspended officers based on their recorded statements and forensic evidence from the police station.
