KARACHI – In what is being described as the biggest heist of the year, burglars looted a jewelry shop on the famous Zebunnisa Street in Saddar, escaping with a safe containing gold and ornaments worth approximately Rs. 200 million (20 Crore).
The Incident
According to police reports, the burglary took place in the early hours of the morning at the city’s prominent bullion market (Sarafa Bazar). The suspects entered the shop around 4:45 AM after cutting through the locks. They remained inside for nearly 45 minutes, systematically emptying the premises.
The Loot and Investigation
Preliminary estimates suggest the thieves made off with 2.5 Kilograms of raw gold and 60 Tolas of gold and silver jewelry kept inside a heavy-duty safe. The investigation took a dramatic turn when CCTV footage revealed that the suspects received help from the market’s own security guard.
“The suspects bribed the watchman, offering him a share of the money. In his greed, the guard assisted the burglars in lifting the heavy safe onto their motorcycle,” stated SSP South.
Current Status
The police have taken the watchman into custody for interrogation based on suspicious activity and CCTV evidence. Meanwhile, the affected jeweler has filed an application for an FIR at the Preedy Police Station. Police are currently scanning additional CCTV footage from surrounding areas to track the escape route. While authorities claim they are close to tracing the culprits, they noted that the shop owner has yet to provide a final, documented valuation of the stolen goods.
