KARACHI: Tragedy struck Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) when a pregnant woman and her unborn child lost their lives after being denied admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) amid allegations of institutional negligence. Initially admitted to the gynecology ward for severe stomach complications, the patient was transferred to the gastroenterology ward, where her condition rapidly deteriorated. Although attending doctors urgently requested an ICU transfer—and sources claimed three beds were available—she was reportedly refused admission, leading to her giving birth in the gastro ward and the tragic demise of both mother and child. Following public outcry, JPMC Executive Deputy Director Dr. Salman promptly formed a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the incident and vowed strict legal action against anyone found responsible for the negligence.
