KARACHI: A devastating pediatric HIV outbreak at the Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital in the SITE Area of Karachi has triggered severe administrative and legal repercussions following allegations of gross medical negligence. Initial investigations suggest that the virus spread to at least 78 children due to unsafe practices, including the alleged reuse or improper handling of syringes alongside critical failures in medical waste disposal and infection control protocols. In response to these findings, the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) has immediately suspended Dr. Huma Aman and Dr. Amanullah Memon for mismanagement and protocol violations, directing them to report to the head office, while a dispenser named Basharat Khan has also been removed from his post. Furthermore, mass show-cause notices have been issued to 37 hospital employees—encompassing doctors, nurses, and administrative staff—who are now legally bound to submit their explanations within 14 days.
The gravity of the situation has prompted high-level government and judicial intervention. Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani officially confirmed the 78 positive cases and assured the public that no individual, regardless of their medical rank, will be considered above the law as strict accountability measures are enforced. Concurrently, the Sindh High Court is actively hearing the case and has ordered the provincial government to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks. This judicial directive mandates a clear explanation of how the virus mutated, the definitive identification of those responsible, and a concrete preventative strategy to avert such healthcare failures in the future.
